The Salt Lick

There is BBQ, and then there is The Salt Lick.
As I walked in the doors, my nose drifted towards the open pit BBQ stacked with every kind of meat you can imagine being smoked to perfection. Recipes here have been handed down since the Civil War and my expectations were high.

I was greeted by friendly folks in a rustic setting with tables large enough you don't have to listen to anyone licking their fingers.

This is the original Salt Lick (Robert's family establishment) and one of the best BBQ restaurants in Austin. Along with the food, the entire experience is one to remember. As soon as we pulled into the lot to park the car it was as if we were going to a football game or some other large event.
The brisket is roasted for 16 hours and basted with the Robert's family sauce. Thurman himself perfected the brisket and it's one of the most sought after menu items in Texas.

Guess what's on the menu at Thanksgiving in Texas? BBQ! With smoked BBQ turkey breast on the menu, sign me up. I did not save room for pie but I imagine the pecan pie is something special.

One rib is the size of my hand so I have my work cut out for me on this plate.
